Maya Ramirez is the Assistant Dean of Instructional Services and Support and the Chairperson for the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Department. Ms. Ramirez coordinates the ESOL Summer Intensive Program, Camp Pacific ESOL Program, and the ESOL Department. To promote a global community on campus, she organizes the international events, which include, Chuseok, La Posada, Chinese New Year, Maslenitsa, and Greek Cultural Night. In addition, Ms. Ramirez teaches Advanced Level ESOL courses as well as ESOL Support courses at the Academy. This department has been one of the leaders in English Learner instruction as the teachers use TESOL methods and research providing the best methods to strengthen the students’ English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Ms. Ramirez has presented the many outstanding programs and research practices at multiple conferences including TABS and TESOL nationally and internationally. In 2015, Ms. Ramirez was nominated for the Peacemaker Award by the Rotary Club of Carlsbad for her efforts to promote global communities and peace in the City of Carlsbad. Ms. Ramirez passion for multicultural education and international studies led her to organize the International Language and Culture Club at ANA. The students that participate in this club learn different languages and cultures from one another. Her professional teaching career includes experience as an Adult ESL and Citizenship instructor, elementary teacher, and as an English Learner Reading Instructor with Carlsbad Unified School District. Ms. Ramirez’s family is one of the original Carlsbad families. She is a 3rd generation Carlsbad native and is raising her three teenage sons in Carlsbad too. Ms. Ramirez enjoys surfing and camping with her three sons. In her free time, Ms. Ramirez runs, plays soccer, and enjoys spending time with her family.
