Explore how boarding school routines create life balance
Boarding school life offers a balanced schedule to cultivate good habits, establish routines and create life balance. Beyond academic classes and electives, boarding school schedules build in time for co-curriculars like sports, clubs, and activities, as well as time for relaxation and study time. While every boarding school campus is unique, most follow a structured daily rhythm:
Mornings: Academics and advisory sessions with faculty
Afternoons: Athletics, fitness programs, clubs, rest and relaxation
Evenings: Mandatory supervised study periods, dorm meetings and hygiene
Weekends: Local, national, and international trips, campus events
To help imagine boarding school life and what a boarding school routine looks like, here is a look at how different schools structure their schedules:
Army and Navy Academy (Carlsbad, CA): This premier college prep military academy for boys (grades 7-12) follows a rigorous daily schedule to incorporate time for academics and electives. After classes end, students participate in tutorials, sports, clubs, rest and relaxation time at the beach, enjoy games in the recreation hall or walk into the local village.
EF Academy (Pasadena, CA): This academy offers a global perspective where international students balance rigorous academics with clubs like Model United Nations. Evenings include study time, but also time on-campus for social activities, such as bonfires, movie nights, or excursions.
Midland School (Ojai, CA): Midland’s boarding school schedule is built on experiential learning in their academic classes, but beyond academics, students participate in all aspects of campus life including: farm work, jobs programs, leadership activities, and family-style meals.
Orme School (AZ): This college prep boarding school has a schedule that focuses on academic classes, afternoon sports or activities (including equestrian), and evening study time. Set on a working ranch, the day includes assigned student duties and hands-on ranch experiences.
The Village School (TX): Offering either a 5-day or 7-day boarding experience, The Village School strives for a balance in their boarding school schedule, combining academics and co-curriculars. There is a community focus and residential support for students 24/7.
Phillips Exeter Academy (NH): Rather than a daily schedule, students follow a weekly schedule that includes attending mandatory Harkness classes. The schedule also includes athletic, extracurricular activities, and residential events.
“The Army and Navy Academy provided a uniquely structured environment where the self-limiting influences of public school are removed so that each individual can rise to their ability.” – Academy Alumnus
What a Daily Curriculum at a Boarding School Looks Like
Renowned for challenging, college-preparatory academics, often offering Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors classes, structured boarding schools offer students unique opportunities to become passionate learners.
Because boarding schools adhere to strict accreditation standards, graduates are frequently accepted into the Ivy League, top public universities like the University of California campuses, and U.S. Military Service Academies. Academic counselors often provide college planning services, test prep and workshops.
Without the distractions of public and many private day school settings, boarding school students receive these benefits:
Small class sizes that allow for discussion and frequent interaction
Individualized faculty attention during classes to engage students
Personalized support after classes end (tutorials or advisory sessions)
Mandatory evening study periods to ensure homework and projects are completed.
“Based on data from The Association of Boarding Schools (TABS), 78% of boarding school students report feeling prepared for the non-academic aspects of college—such as independence and time management—compared to 36% of private day and 23% of public school students. Boarding schools focus on rigorous, immersive environments to build this self-reliance.”
How a Student Lives in a Boarding School
Boarding school life is a 24/7 experience that acts as a catalyst for personal growth. By living away from home, students naturally gain “soft skills” liketime management, problem-solving, and leadership. These are the kinds of experiences and personal traits that college admissions offices and today’s employers seek out.
Dorms and Classrooms
Residential life is a center point on campus, where students learn how to become highly independent, make good choices and increase resiliency. Living with a roommate and participating in residential life meetings helps students learn to navigate interpersonal relationships and take responsibility for their personal health and well-being.
Dining Facilities
Communal dining or family style dinners are prepared by top food service providers like Sage Dining Services and CulinArt Group. They focus on overall wellness and nutrition, but also sometimes incorporate family recipes, culinary arts lessons, multicultural events and special holiday meals. Dining on campus offers faculty, staff and students opportunities to rest, socialize, and practice good manners.
Rest and Relaxation
While the boarding school routine is full, it is all about learning how to create life balance. Boarding schools prioritize downtime to ensure mental health and physical wellness during the week and during weekend activities. Whether it’s surfing the waves on a beachfront campus like the Army and Navy Academy or relaxing in the student recreation hall, students learn how to balance mental, physical, and social interests.
