LEARNING SUPPORTS

The Academy’s focus on using cutting edge boy brain science to educate young men informs our approach toward learning supports. These include support programs that benefit all students, such as structured study hall and advisory periods. Intensive supports, including missed assignment study hall, peer and college tutors, and Learning Strategies and Academic Excellence classes, exist to help select students with individualized educational needs. These include students who have been evaluated for IEPs, 504 plans, and SELPAs.

STUDY HALL

Study Hall is available to students every weeknight. During this period, students have access to a quiet, focused learning environment with faculty support. This resource is optional for students who are meeting the Academy’s academic standards, but is mandatory for cadets who are missing assignments or falling behind in class. Study hall can also be made mandatory upon parental request.

ADVISORY PERIODS

All faculty members hold a weekly advisory period in their classrooms after classes on Monday. During this time, students can receive individualized or small group intensive assistance with their coursework, understanding of complex making up late or missing assignments as permitted by teachers. This valuable time outside of standard classes can help cadets overcome challenging courses and develop investment in their own academic success.

TUTORING

Students in need of private or small group tutoring can benefit from the expertise of their fellow cadets, as well as talented tutors from local community and four-year colleges. The Academy facilitates access to tutoring by employing seniors and juniors in strong academic standing to assist their peers in difficult subject areas. We also hire collegiate tutors for subjects that require special expertise. If your student has a private tutor from outside the Academy, we are able to make arrangements for regular meetings to support your student’s academic success.

LEARNING STRATEGIES

Learning Strategies is a full-semester course designed to equip cadets with the strategies and skills necessary to succeed in the Academy’s rigorous academic curriculum. Focusing on key areas that include executive functioning skills, effective note-taking and test-taking strategies, and social-emotional development, this course provides cadets with the tools to overcome academic challenges and develop strong work habits.

Cadets enhance their executive functioning skills, including time management, organization, task initiation, and goal setting, which are essential for academic success. They will also learn effective note-taking techniques and test-taking strategies to improve their study habits, retention of key information, and ability to approach exams with confidence. Additionally, the course supports social-emotional growth, focusing on resilience, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills to help cadets navigate academic and personal challenges.

With smaller class sizes, cadets receive more frequent opportunities to address their individual academic needs. For applicants required to take this course, or for those who choose it, it will serve as their elective course for at least one semester. At the end of the semester, the Academics Team will reevaluate the cadet’s progress, including their work habits and grades, to determine whether an additional semester is necessary. This course ensures cadets are prepared to meet the demands of their academic journey at the Academy.

Individualized Educational Plans

For applicants who submit documentation identifying classroom accommodations, our Academics team will carefully evaluate the provided materials to develop an ANA 504 Plan. This plan will detail the classroom accommodations we can reasonably provide while the child is enrolled on campus.

As a private school, ANA may not have the same resources as public institutions and, therefore, cannot guarantee implementation of accommodations recommended in external evaluations. The ANA 504 Plan will be implemented upon the parent or guardian’s review and signature. Once signed, the plan will remain in effect for the duration of the student’s enrollment.

If modifications to the ANA 504 Plan are needed, the parent or guardian must submit recent and relevant supporting documentation to justify the requested changes.

Participation in the ANA 504 Plan is entirely voluntary. Should a parent or guardian choose for their child not to receive accommodations, they must complete and sign a waiver indicating their decision.
