Message From The Lower School
Commandant
MAJ Charles Glimka

I’m not sure I can still claim Missouri as my home, but it holds the keys to a simpler past, one that molded who I am and prepared me for a career in the military. I never studied leadership growing up. Everything my parents taught me supported concepts I quickly recognized in “the real world”. All of my successes come from maintaining what I believed to be right and relying on those around me to achieve great things. I’ve always wanted to add value to people’s lives and make a difference in society. Anyone serving in the military can feel proud of making a difference in the lives of people worldwide. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, my biggest fear was finding a place to continue ‘making a difference’. I found no better place than here at the Army and Navy Academy.

Today’s teens need to know they are part of something worthwhile. I honestly hope they find it here. I learned early on in my military career that there is strength in teamwork, structure, and diversity. The basic structure of our program allows them to rely on each other as well as the faculty and staff. The role models and shared success of their classmates speak volumes for the positive environment surrounded with achievement. I’ve never analyzed my success as a philosophical plan, just a basic respect for others and a sincere desire to maintain a good reputation. I look forward to making a difference in the life of anyone who takes advantage of the Academy’s program.

Lower School Commandant of Cadets

Regarding David Ortiz, Class of 2005, and a heroic incident that occurred in 2003:

"David's actions that day exemplify those values taught in JROTC.  A traumatic accident scene such as this is a stressful situation for even the most seasoned professional; and, David handled it with skill and poise.  His evaluation and treatment of those injured was equal to that of a person at a professional level of skill and knowledge in Emergency Medicine.  His actions were instrumental in saving the life of the driver and providing the best possible chance for survival to the female victim that was ejected from the car.  His actions reflect great credit on himself, his school, and the JROTC program."
