Academic Support Services

The Academic Department provides a variety of academic support services for cadets. Below is a brief description of each service. More information on each service can be obtained by contacting the cadet’s Academic Counselor.

Tutorial & Mandatory Tutorial

Tutorial occurs at the end of the class day and is considered part of the academic day; thus, all cadets are required to use this time for academic matters.  This is a valuable opportunity for cadets to receive individualized academic support from their teachers.  Faculty members will be stationed in their classrooms or offices so that cadets may come to them for extra assistance.  Cadets who earn a grade of “D’ or “F” in any course or who display a need for academic support will be assigned Mandatory Tutorial.  Mandatory Tutorial is an academic intervention program designed to assist cadets with content-based academic issues. The Mandatory Tutorial Roster will be published and updated regularly by the Academic Department.

CQ & Mandatory CQ

CQ (Call to Quarters) is the two-hour quiet time set aside from 1845-2045, Monday thru Thursday.  During CQ, cadets may engage only in academic activities.  Most full-time teachers will have regular, weekly Evening Office Hours (see below) during this time to give cadets extra opportunities for specific academic aid. The schedule for weekly office hours will be provided by the Academic Department.  Cadets who earn a grade of “D’ or “F” in any course or who display a need for academic support will be assigned Mandatory CQ. Mandatory CQ is an academic intervention program designed to assist cadets with content-based academic issues. The Mandatory CQ Roster will be published and updated regularly by the Academic Department.

Evening Office Hours

Faculty members evening office hours Monday thru Thursday during CQ in their classrooms or offices. During these office hours, cadets should seek extra assistance. This is another valuable opportunity for cadets to receive individualized academic support from their teachers.  Cadets are encouraged to seek the help of any faculty member on campus, even if the cadet is not enrolled in the teacher’s class. At least one member of the English and Math faculty will be on campus each evening. An Evening Office Hours schedule is published by the Academic Department.

Academic Counseling Program

The Academic Counseling Program provides academic and college counseling as well as standardized testing (i.e. PSAT, SAT, and AP) services for all cadets in grades 9 thru 12.  The grade-specific Academic Counselors closely monitor the academic progress of cadets in their respective companies, guide cadets in establishing their academic schedules for the school year; manage cadets on academic probation status; ensure that graduation requirements are met, and work closely with the Learning Strategist.  The Academic Counselors are responsible for implementing the Mandatory Tutorial and Mandatory CQ academic intervention programs.

Learning Strategies Program

The Learning Strategies Program is an intervention program designed to support cadets with severe histrionic or diagnosed learning challenges.  Cadets who have qualifying disabilities (i.e. IEP, 504) or who display a need for academic intervention are placed in the Learning Strategies Program.  The Learning Strategist works closely with the faculty regarding the content-based academic needs of cadets and regularly conducts SST (Student Study Team) meetings to further support cadets.

"It's going great here.  It's all a learning experience.  It's a challenge living (at) school constantly, but I'm taking advantage of what they have here.  I needed extra help, and I'm getting it here.  It's a family."
