Administration
David Haynes, Head of Upper School, Grades 10-12
Mr. Haynes has a B.S. in History and Political Science, M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, East Tennessee State University. Mr. Haynes begins his second year at the Academy as the Head of Upper School supporting the Academic and Residential Life programs. He has worked in various levels at boarding schools in Tennessee, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York. Earlier in his career he was involved in the public school systems of Tennessee and North Carolina. He has served in prior positions as a teacher, coach, dorm parent, History Department Chair, Director of Residential Life, and Dean of Students.
Jeff Barton, Head of Lower School, Grades 7-9
Mr. Barton has a B.A. Humanities, North Dakota State University; MS Sport Administration, United States Sports Academy; MA School Administration, Azusa Pacific University. Mr. Barton is the Head of Lower School Academic and Residential Life programs. He served as an English teacher for over 25 years, 13 of which have been at the Academy. He also served as Director of Summer Programs of Academy by the Sea/Camp Pacific, a subsidiary of Army and Navy Academy, for 10 years. This is his fifteenth year at the Academy and third as the Head of Lower School.
Jennifer MacLure, Academic & Social Counselor for Grade 10
B.S. in Child Development and Psychology, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Calif. M.A. in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential, University of San Diego, Calif. Ms. MacLure is responsible for maintaining the comprehensive Upper School counseling program and in promoting the academic, career, and personal/social development of each Cadet. Counseling is provided to individuals and small groups. She serves as the Co-Advisor to the Multi-Cultural Club. This is Ms. MacLure’s fourth year at the Academy.
Christy Brown, Academic & Social Counselor for Grade 11
Ms. Brown has a B.S. Early Childhood Education, Ohio University, Ohio; M.A. in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential, University of San Diego. Ms. Brown is responsible for 11th grade academic, personal and social counseling. She counsels the 12th grade students on personal and social issues. She works with the Peer Counseling Program as well as the Multicultural Club. This is her second year at the Academy.
Maren Kroger-Diamond, Director of College Counseling
Ms. Kroger-Diamond has a B.S. Business and Management, University of Redlands, Calif.; M.S. Psychology, California School of Professional Psychology. She holds a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA, a California teaching credential and a GATE certificate which qualifies her to teach gifted students. Ms. Kroger-Diamond is the Director of College Counseling and teaches AP Psychology. This is her thirteenth year teaching and sixth year at the Academy.
Erika Pike, Academic & Social Counselor for Grades 7-9
Mrs. Pike has a B.S. in Liberal Studies with a minor in Marine Science, University of San Diego, Calif.; MA in Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services Credential, University of San Diego, Calif., as well as a California teaching credential. Beverly Tappan, Educational Therapist
Mrs. Tappan has a B.A. Education and M.S. Secondary Education, University of Alabama, Birmingham, Ala. She holds a California Clear Resource Specialist teaching credential and a Professional Educational Therapist Certification, University of California, San Diego. Mrs. Tappan has thirty-four years of combined teaching and administrative experience, including founding and administering a private school for grades 9-12 in Birmingham, Alabama in the 1970’s. She administered the Learning Strategies Program at Army and Navy Academy from 1998-2004. This is her second year rejoining the Academy as Educational Therapist.

Julie Narasky Hall, Head Librarian
Mrs. Hall has a B.A. in History, University of Texas; MLIS, Library and Information Science, San Jose State University, San Jose, Calif. In addition to her library duties, she is the Honor Council Advisor, Technology Coordinator for the Faculty, and the Advisor to the Class of 2014. This is Mrs. Narasky Hall’s nineteenth year at the Academy.

Sue Downey, Department Chair
Mrs. Downey has a B.S. Business, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn.; MA Education with a concentration in Language Arts, Saint Joseph College, West Hartford, Conn. She holds a Connecticut teaching credential. Mrs. Downey teaches English 8 and English 9. This is Mrs. Downey’s twentieth year of teaching and fifth year at the Academy.
Betty Calkin, Teacher
Mrs. Calkin has a B.A. and M.A. Literature and Writing Studies, California State University, San Marcos. She holds a California teaching credential. Mrs. Calkin teaches AP English 11, AP English 12, and English 12. She is the Advisor to the Key Club. This is her sixth year of teaching and her fifth year at the Academy.
David Falkenau, Teacher
Ashley Walker, Teacher
Mrs. Walker has a B.A. in English, Minor in Communications, Lyon College, Batesville, Ark. She holds South Carolina and California teaching credentials and has also taught in Texas and Arkansas. Mrs. Walker received the U.S. Department of Education's American Star of Teaching award in 2004 for her work in increasing writing and literacy scores with eighth graders in Jonesboro, Arkansas. This is her sixteenth year of teaching and her first at the Academy. She also served as a long-term substitute at the Academy during the spring semester of the 2008-09 school year.

Ruben Rodriguez, Department Chair
Mr. Rodriguez has a B.A. Sociology, Saint Joseph's College, East Chicago, Ind.; M.Ed., DePaul University, Chicago, Ill. Mr. Rodriguez teaches Spanish I, Spanish III Honors, and AP Spanish. This is his twenty-seventh year of teaching and seventh year at the Academy.
Garry Dillard, Teacher
Ulrika Pospieszczyk, Teacher
Mrs. Pospieszczyk has a M.A. with a double Major in History of American Literature and Intercultural Studies, University of Munich, Germany. Post Graduate Certificate of Education in French and German, University of Leeds, United Kingdom. She holds a California Teaching Credential. Mrs. Pospieszczyk teaches ESL, French 1, 2, and 3/4. This is her third year of teaching and her second year at the Academy.
Department of Mathematics
Bobby Huggins, Department Chair
Mr. Huggins has a B.A. Liberal Studies, Mathematics, California State University, San Marcos; MBA, Benedictine University, Lisle, Ill. Mr. Huggins teaches Geometry and Algebra II. This is his eleventh year of teaching at the Academy.
Lisa Cafro Teacher
B.F.A. Interior Design, Kean University, Union, NJ. A.S. Math/Physics, Raritan Valley Community College, Raritan, NJ. Mrs. Cafro teaches Algebra II. This is her second year of teaching and her first year at the Academy.
Joe Meyer, Teacher
Mr. Meyers has a B.A. Business Management/Marketing, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, Calif. Mr. Meyer teaches Life Science 7, Middle School Study Skills, Pre-Algebra, and Middle School PE. He is an Assistant Football Coach and coaches Lower School Sports. This is Mr. Meyer’s second year teaching at the Academy.
Jolene Mitchell, Teacher
Ms. Mitchell has a B.S. Biology, University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Mitchell teaches Algebra I, Pre-Calculus, and AP Calculus. She is the Advisor of California Scholarship Federation. This is her third year of teaching and her second year at the Academy.
Angela Redard, Teacher
Mrs. Redard has a B.A. Sociology, Washington College, Chestertown, MD; M.Ed., Wilmington University, Georgetown, Del. Mrs. Redard holds a California teaching credential. She teaches Math 7, Earth Science, and Algebra 1. This is her fifth year of teaching and her second year at the Academy.
Department of Science
Amy Coe, Department Chair
Ms. Coe has a B.S. Chemistry, California State University, San Marcos. She holds a California teaching credential. Ms. Coe teaches Chemistry and AP Chemistry. She also teaches at CSUSM in the Physics department. She serves as the Advisor to the Senior Class. This is her eleventh year of teaching at the Academy.
Robin Cowen, PhD., Teacher
Dr. Cowen has a B.S. Education and BS Horticulture, University of Minnesota, St Paul; M.S. Floriculture Breeding, Michigan State University, East Lansing; Ph.D. Plant Breeding and Cytogenetics, Iowa State University, Ames. She holds a California teaching credential. Dr. Cowen teaches Biology and AP Biology and is the Advisor to the Forensics Club. This is her twenty-fourth year of teaching and seventh year at the Academy.
Newton Quan, Teacher
Mr. Quan has a B.S. Physics, University of California, Irvine. He holds a California teaching credential. Mr. Quan teaches Physics and AP Physics. He is an Assistant Soccer Coach and an Assistant Football Coach. This is his fifth year of teaching at the Academy.
Department of Social Sciences
Daniel Primbs, Department Chair
Mr. Primbs has a AB Economics, University of California, Davis; M.A. and ABD Ph.D. Economics, George Mason University, Va. Mr. Primbs teaches Economics, US Government and AP US History. He is the Tennis Coach and Advisor to Academic Decathlon. This is his eleventh year of teaching and fifth year at the Academy.
Bert Ford, Teacher
Mr. Ford has a B.A. History, University of Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Ford is a graduate of Army and Navy Academy, Class of 1974, and a retired Firefighter/Paramedic. Mr. Ford teaches U.S. History and serves as Head Football Coach. This is his eighteenth year of teaching and fifth year at the Academy.
Gavin Hooker, Teacher
Mr. Hooker has a M.A. Education, National University. B.A. History, California State University, San Marcos. Mr. Hooker teaches World History and Study Skills. He specializes in Eastern European history and Central American History. This is his first year at Army Navy Academy.
Ethan Segovia Teacher
B.A. World and US History, University of California, Santa Cruz. He holds a California teaching credential. Mr. Segovia teaches 7th grade Geography, 8th grade History, and Middle School Media Studies. He is the Advisor to the Class of 2012. This is his third year of teaching at the Academy.
Department of Fine Arts
John Musser, Department Chair
Mr. Musser has a B.A. Music, University of California, Berkeley; M.A. Music Composition, San Diego State University, Calif. He holds a California teaching credential. Mr. Musser teaches Music Technology and Guitar. This is Mr. Musser’s twentieth year of teaching and seventeenth year at the Academy.
Mike Donovan, Bandmaster
MAJ Donovan has a B.A. Music, University of California, Riverside; Master of Music, University of Oregon. MAJ Donovan teaches Lower and Upper School Band and Upper School Advanced Marching Band. This is his thirty-fifth year of teaching and third year at the Academy.
Dan Loden, Teacher
Mr. Loden has a B.A. Business Administration, San Diego State University, San Diego, Calif. Mr. Loden teaches Yearbook and Journalism. He is the Advisor to the Harvard Model Congress, as well as Golf and Water Polo Coach. Additionally, he supervises the Academy lifeguards and Weekend Activities Program. This is Mr. Loden’s thirty-seventh year of teaching at the Academy.
Terry Matsuoka, Teacher
Mr. Matsuoka has a B.A. Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting, printmaking and photography, Minor in Communications – TV and Film, San Diego State University, San Diego, Calif. He holds a California teaching credential and a TEFL certificate (ESL). Mr. Matsuoka teaches Art and Photography. This is his ninth year of teaching and sixth at the Academy.
Department of JROTC
Michael Basista, SAI, Major US Army Special Forces (Ret.)
MAJ Basista has a B.S. History and Political Science, Campbell University, N.C. He holds a JROTC Instructor Certificate from the United States Army Cadet Command. Additionally, he is a certified fitness trainer by the American College of Sports Medicine. He retired from the Army after 24 years of service and is a graduate of numerous military courses. As the Senior Army Instructor, MAJ Basista is the senior leadership advisor and teaches LET IV. This is his fifteenth year of teaching and eighth year at the Academy.
Gregory Brown, Sergeant First Class US Army (Ret.)
AA Liberal Arts with a major in Communications, West Los Angeles Community College, CA. He holds a JROTC Instructor Certificate. SFC Brown retired from the Army after 22 years of service. He teaches LET I, coaches the Rifle Team and Lower School Football. Additionally, is he is Advisor to the Class of 2011 and the Beta Club. This is his eighth year of teaching at the Academy.
Martin R. Davis, First Sergeant US Army (Ret.)
1SG Davis has a Certificate of Communications, University of California, San Francisco, Calif.; B.A. International Relations, American Military University, Va. He holds a JROTC Instructor Certificate. 1SG Davis retired from the U.S. Army after 24 years of service. He teaches LET III and is the high school Drill Team Instructor. He also serves as Cross Country and Track Coach. This is his fourteenth year of teaching at the Academy.
Veronica Parker-Davis, Sergeant First Class US Army (Ret.)
SFC Parker-Davis has a B.S. Secondary Education, Magna Cum Laude, Madison University, Wis.; M.S. Education Counseling, LaCross University, Miss. She holds a JROTC Instructor Certificate from the United States Army Cadet Command. SFC Parker-Davis retired from the US Army after 20 years of service. She teaches LET II. This is her eighth year of teaching at the Academy.
