Academics

What Constitutes Excellence in Academics?
Excellence in academics stems from passionate teachers; a challenging, college-prep curriculum; a motivating and structured learning environment; and positive role models. Excellence in academics is an essential building block of The Army Navy Experience. Small class sizes and personal attention from teachers, as well as cadets' own disciplined attention to their studies, motivate cadets to reach their potential. Since its inception in 1910, Army and Navy Academy has sought to develop scholarship and honorable character its young men. In order to achieve these ends, it is essential that the academic curriculum be appropriately demanding and that it stress good citizenship. The rigorous core curriculum, based on the University of California’s entrance requirements, is taught through a carefully developed learning system. Our program offers a college-preparatory curriculum that includes Advanced Placement (AP) courses, as well as many honors classes. Other classes expose students to visual arts, drama and music, allowing each cadet to explore and express his creative side. Recognizing that each cadet learns differently, the 10-to-1 student-teacher ratio allows for customized strategies and tutoring.

Members of our recent graduating class were accepted to one or more colleges or universities. Included in these schools were: the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Rutgers University, Penn State University, University of California-Los Angeles, -Davis, -Irvine and -Santa Cruz campuses, University of Southern California (USC), University of San Diego (USD), New York University, The Citadel, Pepperdine University and other fine educational institutions.

A large measure of the credit for our graduates' success goes to our dedicated faculty and staff. At Army Navy, the academic experience extends beyond the classroom. Teachers are committed to educating the “whole” child and recognize that the job does not always end at 3:00 p.m. Teachers are available for tutoring immediately after classes end, as well as in the evening during study hall. Our teachers and staff serve as role models and mentors, getting to know cadets personally. They are willing to spend extra time if a cadet is having problems academically; they also participate in clubs and sports, so they interact with cadets on many levels. The Academy provides in-service and other training to keep the faculty apprised of current teaching methods and subject matter.
